    Images on A4 pages

A4 is 210 × 297 millimetres (8.27 × 11.69 inches). It is the standard paper size in most countries outside the United States and Canada. This page starts with A4 selected, and each image is placed on its own A4 page.

    Portrait or landscape

With the setting Auto, a wide image gets a landscape page and a tall image gets a portrait page. Choose Portrait or Landscape if you want all pages to be the same.

    Margins and printing

Most printers cannot print to the very edge of the paper. A margin of 10 mm is a safe choice, and 5 mm works on many printers. Choose no margin only for a PDF that you will view on a screen, or print with an option that lets the printer scale the page.

How large should the image be?

For a sharp print at 300 dpi, a full A4 page needs an image of about 2480 × 3508 pixels. At 150 dpi, which is good enough for many documents, 1240 × 1754 pixels is enough. An image with fewer pixels can still be placed on the page, but it will look soft when printed at that size.

    Fit or fill

Fit keeps the whole image on the page. Fill scales the image until it covers the page area and crops what does not fit. For a scan of a document, use Fit. For a photo that should fill the page, use Fill.

    Scanned A4 documents

If you scanned an A4 document and the pages show white bars, the scan may have a different shape than A4, or a margin that the scanner added. Use Fill, or crop the scan before you add it. A document scan in black and white is usually much smaller as a PNG in lossless mode than as a color JPEG.
