What are stop words?

Stop words are very common words, such as the, is, and and of, that carry little meaning on their own. Removing them from a frequency count makes topic words rise to the top. This page starts with a standard English list of about 170 entries, including common contractions.

Edit the list

The list is in the box above the results. Add words, such as a brand name you want to ignore, or delete words you want to keep. Separate entries with spaces, commas or new lines. Use Reset list to go back to the default.

See what was removed

Below the table you will see how many stop words were removed and what share of the text they made up. A high share is normal, because stop words often make up around half of English prose.

When not to remove them

Stop word removal is not always right. Words like not and no change meaning, and phrases such as to be or not to be lose their sense. Remove them from the list when negation matters, for example in review analysis.
