Instagram profile picture size
| Detail | Specification |
|---|---|
| Upload size | At least 320 x 320 pixels |
| Shape to upload | A square, 1:1 |
| How it is shown | As a circle |
| Formats | JPG or PNG |
Instagram shows the picture quite small, so 320 x 320 pixels is enough, but a larger square such as 1080 x 1080 gives a sharper result on big screens, and Instagram scales it down. Use a square. A picture that is not square is cropped to one.
The circle crop
A circle that touches the four sides of a square covers about 78.5% of its area, so the four corners, about 21.5%, are cut off. Keep the face or the logo in the middle, and leave some room at the edges. The tool shades the corners that will be cut, so you can see how the picture will look.
How to make a profile picture
- Choose a photo with the face or logo clearly visible.
- Choose Fill, and drag the photo until the face is in the middle of the circle.
- Pick the size, 320 x 320 or 1080 x 1080 pixels.
- Download the picture and upload it from your profile.
Tips for a good profile picture
- Use a close shot with a simple background. Details disappear at a small size.
- For a logo, leave a margin around it so the circle does not cut it.
- Use good light and a sharp photo. Screenshots and small photos look soft.
