How to shuffle a list
- Paste or type your items in the box, one per line. A sample list is there to start with.
- The list is shuffled as soon as you type or change an option. Press Shuffle to get a new order.
- Copy the result or download it as a text file.
Lists that use commas or spaces
Your list does not have to be one item per line. Choose Comma in the Split by box to shuffle a list such as red, green, blue, or Space to shuffle single words. You can also type your own separator. The Join with box sets how the shuffled items are written back, so you can turn a column of names into a comma separated line, or the other way round.
Cleaning up while you shuffle
- Trim spaces: removes spaces at the start and end of every item.
- Remove empty items: drops blank lines and empty entries.
- Remove duplicates: keeps only the first copy of an item that appears more than once.
Is the shuffle fair?
Yes. The tool uses the Fisher-Yates algorithm, which gives every possible order the same chance, together with your browser secure random number generator. A list of 10 items can be ordered in 3,628,800 ways, and each one is equally likely. Some quick scripts sort a list with a random comparison, which produces a biased order, and this tool avoids that.
What people use it for
- Deciding the order of speakers, presenters or turns.
- Seating charts, team lists and group work in a classroom.
- Putting a playlist, quiz questions or flashcards in random order.
- Drawing the order for a raffle or a game.
Your list is processed in your browser and is never uploaded. If you need a repeatable order, use randomize list, which accepts a seed. To shuffle text line by line, see shuffle lines, and to choose winners, use the random list picker.
