Resize an image in three steps
- Add the picture. Drop it on the box, choose it from your device, or paste it.
- Say how big it should be. Type a width or a height in pixels. The other side follows. Or switch Resize by to Percentage or File size.
- Download. The new size and the file size are shown in the list.
Which size should you choose?
Start from where the picture will be used:
| Use | Common size |
|---|---|
| Full-width image on a website | 1,920 pixels wide |
| Image inside an article | 1,200 pixels wide |
| Email photo | 1,200 to 1,600 pixels on the long side |
| Profile picture | 400 to 800 pixels square |
| Thumbnail | 300 to 600 pixels wide |
| Product photo | 1,000 to 2,000 pixels |
A good rule: use the largest size that the picture will be shown at, and no more. If it will appear 600 pixels wide, a 1,200 pixel copy is enough for sharp screens with double density, and a 4,000 pixel original only wastes bytes.

Built-in alternatives
On a Mac, open the image in Preview and choose Tools, then Adjust Size. In Windows, the Photos app and Paint can resize by percentage or pixels. They work on one file at a time and cannot crop to an exact shape or fit a size limit, which is where an online tool helps, especially for batches.
After resizing
If the file is still above a limit, use the image compressor. To learn how pixels, DPI and file size relate, read How to resize an image.
