Why AVIF
AVIF is the newest common web image format. It often produces files a third to a half smaller than JPG at a similar look, supports transparency and handles smooth gradients well. All current major browsers can display it.
Browser support for writing AVIF
Displaying AVIF and creating it are different things. This tool writes AVIF through the browser canvas, and not every browser or version can do that. The page tests this when it loads. If your browser cannot, the output falls back to WebP and a notice is shown. Updating the browser or trying another one usually helps.
Settings
- Quality 60 to 70 gives a good balance. AVIF stays clean at lower numbers than JPG, so do not compare the numbers directly.
- Encoding is slower than JPG or WebP, especially for large images. A Max width of 1,920 speeds it up.
AVIF or WebP?
AVIF is smaller, WebP is faster to create and more widely accepted by tools and content systems. A common approach is to serve AVIF first with WebP and JPG as fallbacks, using the picture element. The image compression guide shows the markup.
