Instagram portrait post sizes
| Format | Aspect ratio | Size in pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 |
| Grid, taller | 3:4 | 1080 x 1440 |
4:5 is the classic portrait post. The taller 3:4 shape matches the thumbnails in the profile grid in recent versions of Instagram. Check the app to see which one it offers when you post.
Why use a portrait post
A portrait post fills more of the screen than a square or a landscape one, so it stands out in the feed. It suits photos of people, outfits, products held in the hand, buildings and any scene that is taller than it is wide. Phone photos are taken in portrait, so it also needs the least cropping.
How the grid crops a portrait post
A 4:5 post loses only a thin strip on each side in the 3:4 grid thumbnail, about 34 pixels on a 1080 pixel width. A 3:4 post is not cropped at all. Portrait is the safest format for the profile grid.
Turning your photos into portrait posts
| Your picture | What happens in a 4:5 frame | Best method |
|---|---|---|
| A phone photo at 3:4, for example 3000 x 4000 | About 6% is cut from the height | Fill |
| A phone screenshot at 9:16, for example 1080 x 1920 | About 30% is cut from the height | Fill, or fit with bars |
| A square picture | The sides are cut if it fills the frame | Fill, or fit with a blurred background |
| A landscape photo at 3:2, for example 6000 x 4000 | Almost half of the width is cut | Fit with a blurred background, or choose another photo |
