Paragraph Counter

Count the paragraphs in your text, and see how many sentences, words and characters each one has.

What the paragraph counter shows

Paste a text and see how many paragraphs it has, the average and longest paragraph in words, and a table with the sentence, word and character count of each paragraph. It is useful for essays with a required number of paragraphs, and for checking that no paragraph is too long.

What counts as a paragraph

You can choose how paragraphs are separated:

  • A blank line: the usual way to write. Text between blank lines is one paragraph, even if it contains single line breaks.
  • Every line break: each line is its own paragraph. Use it for text copied from a place that puts a line break after every paragraph without a blank line.

Lines that hold only spaces count as blank.

How long should a paragraph be?

For web pages, short paragraphs of one to four sentences, or about 40 to 80 words, are easier to read on a screen. Academic writing often uses longer paragraphs of 100 to 200 words. The table helps you find the ones that run too long.
