Instagram post sizes
| Format | Aspect ratio | Size in pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Square | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 |
| Portrait | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 |
| Grid | 3:4 | 1080 x 1440 |
| Landscape | 1.91:1 | 1080 x 566 |
1080 pixels wide is a safe choice for all of them. Instagram can change its formats, so check what the app offers when you post, especially for 3:4.
Which post size should you use?
- Portrait, 4:5. It takes up more room in the feed than a square or a landscape picture, so it is the usual choice for photos of people and products.
- Square, 1:1. Works well for graphics, logos and simple compositions.
- Grid, 3:4. A taller shape that matches the way recent versions of Instagram show your profile grid.
- Landscape, 1.91:1. The widest shape. It takes the least room in the feed and is cropped the most in the grid.
How the profile grid crops your post
Recent versions of Instagram show the thumbnails in your profile grid in a 3:4 shape. A square post loses the left and right sides in the thumbnail, and a 4:5 post loses a thin strip on each side. A landscape post loses much more. Turn on Show the profile grid crop in the tool to see the part that the grid shows, and keep the important part of the picture in the middle.
Carousel posts
A carousel can hold many pictures, and the first picture usually sets the shape for the rest. Make all the slides the same size, for example 1080 x 1350, so that none is cropped by surprise.
How to fit a photo to a post size
- Choose your photo and pick the post format.
- Choose Fill to crop the photo to the shape, or Fit to keep the whole photo with bars or a blurred background.
- Drag the photo to choose the part that stays.
- Download the picture and upload it to Instagram.
