What counts as a letter?
A letter is an alphabetic character in any language: a to z, accented letters such as é and ñ, and letters of other alphabets such as Greek, Cyrillic or Arabic. Spaces, digits, punctuation, symbols and emoji are not letters, so they are left out of the letter count but still appear in the other numbers.
What you get
- Letters, the main number, updated while you type.
- Uppercase and lowercase letters, useful for checking capitalization.
- Vowels and consonants for Latin letters. The letter y is counted as a consonant.
- Unique letters, which shows how many different letters the text uses.
- Digits, characters and words for context.
Count a specific letter
Type one or more letters in the box named Count these letters or characters. For example, enter e to count every e, or aeiou to count each vowel separately. The table shows the count and the share of all characters for each one. Tick Match case if A and a should be counted separately.
Example
| Text | Characters | Letters | Digits | Spaces | Punctuation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hello, World! 123 | 17 | 10 | 3 | 2 | 2 |
Common uses
- Checking the length of a name, a username or a word game answer.
- Poems, slogans and headlines with a strict letter limit.
- Homework and exercises about vowels and consonants.
