How to find a percentage of a number
Divide the percentage by 100 to turn it into a decimal, then multiply it by the number.
percentage of a number = (percentage / 100) x number
For 15% of 200, 15 / 100 = 0.15, and 0.15 x 200 = 30.
Worked examples
| Question | Working | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 15% of 80 | 0.15 x 80 | 12 |
| 20% of 50 | 0.20 x 50 | 10 |
| 7.5% of 240 | 0.075 x 240 | 18 |
| 150% of 40 | 1.5 x 40 | 60 |
| 0.5% of 2,000 | 0.005 x 2,000 | 10 |
A percentage above 100% gives a result larger than the number you started with.
Add or subtract the percentage
Below the answer, the calculator also shows the number plus the percentage and the number minus the percentage. This is what you need for a price with tax or a price after a reduction. A tax rate of 5%, for example, on 200 is 10, so the price with tax is 210. For full sale and tax calculations, use the percent off calculator.
Table of common percentages
The table below the calculator lists 1% to 200% of your number. It is handy when you need several percentages of the same amount, such as a range of discounts or commission rates.
