What a vertical flip does
A vertical flip swaps the top and the bottom of the picture along a horizontal line through the middle, like a reflection in still water. The left stays on the left. Text in the picture is upside down and mirrored.
Flip vertically or rotate 180 degrees?
A vertical flip is not the same as turning the picture upside down. After a 180 degree rotation text is readable if it was upside down. After a vertical flip it is mirrored. If the picture only needs to be turned around, use rotate 180 degrees.
When to flip vertically
- A scan or an image from a device that writes the picture bottom to top.
- Making a reflection: flip a copy, place it under the original and fade it.
- Textures and patterns that need a mirrored copy.
- Correcting a texture or a map that came into a program upside down.
