Randomize a list
Enter your items and the tool returns them in a new random order. It works like the shuffle list tool, with two extras that help when the result matters: numbering and a seed.
Number the result
Tick Number the result to get a ranked list, such as 1. Hiro, 2. Alice, 3. Grace. This is handy for a running order, a draft order or a list of who goes first.
Get the same order again with a seed
Normally every shuffle is different. If you type a word or number in the Seed box, the order depends only on that seed and on your list. The same list with the same seed always gives the same order, and a different seed gives a different order. This is useful when you need a result that others can check or that you must reproduce later.
- Agree on a seed before the draw, for example the date or a number that you all chose, and everyone can run the tool and see the same result.
- Keep the list in the same order and spelling, because a change to the list changes the result.
- Leave the seed empty for a normal random shuffle, which uses your browser secure random number generator.
A seeded shuffle uses a simple generator and is meant for repeatable fairness, not for secrets. Do not use it where someone must not be able to predict the result.
Cleaning your list
Trim spaces, remove empty items and remove duplicates with the options. You can split the list by line, comma, space or your own separator, and join the result in any of those ways.
To shuffle the lines of a file while keeping a header row, use shuffle lines. To choose a winner rather than reorder everyone, use the random list picker.
