How to use this list

Type in the search box: a character such as €, a name such as euro, a decimal code such as 8364, a hex code such as U+20AC, or a word from the meaning such as arrow. Pick a category to narrow the list. Click a character to copy it, or click an entity to copy it with its & and its semicolon.

Named, decimal and hex

Every character can be written in three ways: &euro; by name, &#8364; by decimal code and &#x20AC; by hex code. They are exactly the same to the browser. Only some characters have a name, but every character has a code. HTML defines more than 2,000 names, and this list holds the ones people use most.

You often do not need them

When your page is saved as UTF-8 and has <meta charset="utf-8">, you can type é, €, and © directly. The characters you must always write as entities are the ampersand, the less-than sign and, inside attribute values, the quotation mark. Entities are also the way to write characters that are hard to type, or that look the same as other characters, such as the non-breaking space.

Tools for entities

Turn entities into text with HTML decode, turn text into entities with HTML encode, and convert entities between formats with the entity decoder and converter. The HTML entities guide explains the rules and the common problems.

Frequently asked questions

What is the entity for the copyright sign?

The name is &copy;, the decimal code is &#169; and the hex code is &#xA9;.

What is the difference between &nbsp; and a normal space?

A non-breaking space keeps two words on the same line and is not collapsed with the spaces around it. A normal space can be collapsed and can wrap.

Do I have to use entities for accented letters?

No. With UTF-8 you can type them directly. Entities are only needed when the page cannot use UTF-8.

How many HTML entities are there?

HTML defines more than 2,000 named entities. This list holds the common ones. The decoder tool understands all of them.
